5. Invitation to Rajah & Tann-Cambridge Moot 2017

The LSE has been invited to participate in the Rajah & Tann-Cambridge Moot 2017. For the past two years, the moot has been a success in bringing together Singaporean law students all over the UK to hone their advocacy skills and legal thinking. Given that it is sponsored by Rajah & Tann Asia, partners from the firm fly to the UK specifically to judge the finals of the moot and it is therefore a very prestigious opportunity for young aspiring lawyers to impress the partners and build a wider network with law students from other universities. Date: 4-5 Feb 2017

6. Careers Updates

FinTech job opportunity at FriendlyScore FriendlyScore, an expanding FinTech startup, is looking for interested candidates to join as Sales/Business Analysts. They provide alternative credit scoring based on big data, which gives an opportunity to people with low creditworthiness (such as students, foreign citizens and underbanked people) to get a loan. Also, they target retail banks, insurances, and P2P lending platforms offering our algorithm in order to increase their revenues by including more clients from the aforementioned group. For more info, please find their website at friendlyscore . com/ FriendlyScore is currently expanding to Singapore, thus they are looking for Singaporean students and graduates who would be interested in joining, doing a part-time internship if you are still studying at the LSE or joining for a full-time role if you have already graduated in order to gain experience. The duties include the following:

  • acquiring a good commercial awareness of lenders and the FinTech sector in your specified country

  • identifying clients in your country (intelligent online search for retail banks, insurances, and for any potential clients)

  • contacting them by email explaining about and offering our product

  • attending FinTech/startup events and promoting FriendlyScore

  • anything else you can contribute to our venture, we are opened to learn about you and your skills

What you will gain from this experience:

  • learn about FinTech, including both the technical and the commercial side

  • get a first-hand insight of venture development

  • experience multitasking by taking responsibility for different tasks

  • salaries are negotiable depending on your availability, work-load, and experience

If you are interested, please send your CV to m.molnar@friendlyscore.com with a brief description of your interests, background, and availability (how much you could work, when you could join etc.). For further inquiries, please email M.Molnar@lse.ac.uk

7. Constitutional Matters: Calling for Suggestions

For those who did not attend the previous AGM, you might be interested to know that an amendment to the LSE SingSoc's constitution was raised and hotly debated. The issue was whether society members should be allowed to leave the SingSoc AGM before the elections have finished. Here is a summary of the arguments on both sides (for which your constitutional officer admittedly felt strong empathy):

  • Allowing members to leave early permits more flexibility, which recognises the problem of clashing commitments. This might encourage more people to attend future AGMs.

  • Preventing members from leaving early would accord proper respect to the election process and ensure that those who run for later exco positions are voted in in an equally democratic manner.

We would like to invite suggestions for an amendment which will strike a progressive compromise. An example would be a clause which stipulates that if anyone leaves early, he/she forfeits his/her next singsoc event subsidy. Careful phrasing of the amendment will be greatly appreciated :) For further inquiries or to submit a suggestion, please contact our Constitutional Officer, Josh Han, via Facebook message or text/Whatsapp (+44 7548 133807). We look forward to hearing from you! :)
