LSE SINGAPORE SOCIETY

IMG_3150 (1)_edited.jpg

The LSESU Singapore Society serves as an avenue for Singaporeans in LSE to reach out to one another while studying overseas. Through various activities such as the Orientation Camp held in Singapore, Chinese New Year Lunch, Christmas Dinner and Springboard Singapore, we not only help Singaporeans keep in touch with each other but also provide opportunities for them to learn more about careers back home. The society also participates in intercollegiate activities, such as the Singapore Warwick Summer Games or football matches with other London universities, which allows Singaporeans to meet others studying in London.

EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE 22/23

JORDAN LIM

President

Jordan is a first-year economics student at LSE. Despite being a fervent believer that LSE stands for Let’s See Europe, the London School of Economics has thus far proven him wrong. Hence, Jordan has settled with studying about monetary stability in Europe instead of using his newfound economics knowledge to find the cheapest Airbnb apartments there :”)

Jordan also has a borderline unhealthy obsession over food. If you meet him, chances are that you will find him in one of three states: thinking about food, looking for food, or actually eating food. Jordan is also a self-proclaimed Fried Chicken Connoisseur. So far, he has made it a point to try the fried chicken of every country he visits, and he highly recommends KFC's Double Grander Cheeser if you ever visit the Czech Republic.

Food and travel aside, Jordan is a certified Koreaboo. Jordan knows the lyrics and fan chants to IU's top songs by heart, and you will most definitely hear him mutter ‘aigoo’ at some point during your interactions with him. He also prefers not to talk about his (embarrassing) past of being a Kpop-dance tryhard. But if you ever need someone to talk about all things LSE or SingSoc, do feel free to approach him! He will be more than happy to have a chat!

ANN LYNN TAN

Vice-President

Ann Lynn is a second-year Geography with economics student who likes to always emphasize that her degree is a BSc. If she is not running around her busy day, you might catch her in her room wallowing in self-doubt if her Geography degree is worth the tuition fees. Besides that she is also maintaining a 249 day streak of learning Japanese on Duolingo which surprisingly taught her more than the 300 pound class she paid for Japanese in LSE. But hey, maybe it’s the consistency.

Besides school commitments, she likes to dabble in multiple hobbies if she finds time for it. From café hopping, drawing, editing videos, cooking to wax sealing cards to send back home, she finds small things to do to keep her positive while she learns during her degree about the existential threat climate change brings and that she can't do much to change it. Random fact would be her dream job is to own a farm, with specifically 3 sheep and a horse, near the sea with her own café attached to it. If you would like to have a chat, she would be delighted if you dropped a text!

DILLON LOH

Secretary

MAWA (which stands for, Must Always Walk Alone) Man enforces safe-distancing measures as he repels people and objects far apart. To his friends, he is Dillon, a History & International Relations major in his early 20s.

Dillon is a fanatical Manchester United fan who grew up when Manchester United was hot garbage and he was constantly taunted by his Liverpool fan family. This made him despise everything Liverpool including their motto - You’ll Never Walk Alone (YNWA). His hatred for Liverpool so far exceeds his love for Man Utd that it manifested as a telekinesis power in MAWA Man to push objects and people through his eyes.

Besides watching Manchester United, Dillon also enjoys watching basketball (to take his mind off how bad Manchester United are), travelling (everywhere but Liverpool) and running (to escape the growing taunts about Manchester United). Do contact Dillon if you are willing to hear him rant about the absolute state that Manchester United are in but do not contact him if you are a Liverpool fan.

Zulhilmi Zulkiffli

Treasurer

Zulhilmi is a second-year Politics and International Relations student, who likes to make travelling his entire personality. He says it’s because he’s learning International Relations but it’s all international and no relations actually. He has travelled to France, Germany, Italy, Ireland, Canada and the United States. He’s able to afford these trips by cooking meals at home, which is another one of his hobbies but also so that he can procrastinate from studying. He likes to draw inspiration from Nigella Lawson, Jamie Oliver and Gordon Ramsay as well as other Asian cooks like his mum :D. He’s more than happy to share his recipes or grocery tips!

PS Sainsbury’s over Waitrose anytime.

RACHEL LYE

Events Officer

Rachel is an avid foodie and ran for events manager mainly so that she can plan more food related events, but also because she enjoys planning events for her Singaporean friends! She came to LSE because to her it stands for “Let’s See Europe”, which explains why she is never in London during any long weekends or holidays. But if you are trying to find her, she can be often spotted at spin classes, muching away at Katsu-dons in EatTokyo (Holborn) or taking advantage of her friends’ prep memberships to get free coffee. Rachel’s other interests include watching musicals and musicals (at normal speed), as well as, watching her lectures (at 1.5x speed).

On a side note, she is a first-year law student who has an erratic sleep cycle to match her copious number of readings (maybe it’s because she spends a bit too much time on TikTok and calling her friends back home in Singapore). Rachel also likes to think that she’s quite friendly, so feel free to hit her up to find good eats, walk to interesting spots in London or head to church service on Sundays.

TIMOTHY NG

Events Officer

*CatJAM* Tim is a first year Law student KAPPA, he does economics because he got JEBAITED by his peers and seniors around him BibleThump. When he is not copying some smart guy’s problem sets on the day of submissions, he enjoys trying all kinds of interesting food or playing games with friends on discord, all of which makes him FeelsGoodMan. In fact, his lifelong dream is to go pro in a game so he can drop out of school, but sadly those odds are looking slimmer and slimmer with each year PepeHands.

Tim is a 5Head who enjoys all kinds of memes and will likely laugh at all of them, no matter how Pepega they may be. Now if only he could find that special someone with whom he could share all his memes with FeelsBadMan. If this made you Sadge, please consider using your Twitch Prime on my channel Pog.

If anyone understood this entire thing, please hit me up we will be great friends

GLADYS CHONG

Corporate Relations Officer

Gladys is a first-year Philosophy and Economics student. Officially, she is in London for a degree but spends an unseemly amount of time at society events and pubs. When she is not rushing between socials, she worries about the (very real) prospect of unemployment as a Philosophy major and does absolutely nothing about it. She often haunts the Old Building and makes a point to attend LSE’s Lunchtime Concerts every week to justify her expensive tuition fees.

Every Monday, she goes ice skating at Queens, where she racks up enough bruises to excuse herself from sports for the rest of the week. She is also a reckless traveller, once flying to Berlin for no reason other than to listen to Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos in Brandenburg. Due to her many blunders throughout the academic year, she is a good source of information about what NOT to do, so feel free to approach her for advice on anything from travelling to club nights.

WAYNE GOH

Careers Officer

Wayne is a first-year student studying Accounting & Finance. As an avid sports enthusiast, I enjoy watching and playing Football, Basketball and Handball. My other hobbies include powerlifting, watching history documentaries and eating good food. Do hit me up if you need any food recommendations ^^

Something that most people don’t know about me is that I can play almost every single sport.

IMG_4917.JPG

VIDYUN GUPTA

Sports Officer

Vidyun is a first-year BSc Management student at LSE. He loves every sport and is ready for a game of football or badminton any day. His favourite team is Bayern Munich (no, you’re the farmer.) Did we mention he has played futsal nationally too? But somehow he has no talent in his left foot when it comes to it. Ever keen to get involved with sports, just give him a shout and he will make it happen!

If you’re down for a few pints of beer, or any drink (doesn’t have to be alcoholic, actually it does) he’s down for that too. All jokes aside, he’s eager to foster a sporting culture amongst our singaporean community and is very approachable in terms of any ideas you all may have!

JAMESON CHIA

Constitutional Officer

Hi everyone! I'm Jameson, the Constitutional Officer for 2022/2023. I love the Constitution. The Constitution is such a passion of mine, that you might even say that the Constitution constitutes a big part of my heart. I work hard every day to better understand and apply the Constitution. During my free hours, you might also catch me around school reading the Constitution. If you do, do chat me up! We can have a lively discussion about the Constitution.

PANAREE AVASADANOND

Publicity Officer

Panaree is a first year Economics and Economic History student. Though originally from Thailand, Panaree is glad to call Singapore, where she has lived for most of her life, home. This also explains her unusually long surname, which her Singaporean friends collectively decided to pronounce as ‘avocado’ for simplicity's sake.

Panaree also has an unhealthy obsession with anything noodles, liking her noodles best chewy and al dente. One of her favourite memories being camping at a kbbq buffet after school for 4 hours as if offered unlimited noodle refills for her army stew. On a sad note, she has been desperately trying to find her favourite Singaporean food, meepok, in London, but to no avail. So if anyone has found meepok in London, or just wants to have a chat over a nice bowl of piping hot noodles, do hit her up! (p.s. old building noodles aren’t that bad! just add the chiu chow chili oil!)

CHANG YU XIN

Welfare Officer

Yu Xin is a Year 1 Language, Culture and Society student who is not a mugger but finds joy in learning random things. As a cheapo, she seeks to exploit the vast LSE resources, mainly by signing up for free lessons she can find in LSE (which explains why she's learning Arabic and also did random courses on religion in her time here).

When she's not studying (which is most times), Yu Xin can be found hopping around parks and gardens around London. Otherwise, she's locked up in her room reading comics and historical fiction, or maybe a cookbook because she is not a particular fan of the British cuisine. However, all things considered, you can always drop her a message to say hi and she'll reply regardless of time :)
